Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent, with about 30 million km² and over 1.4 billion inhabitants. It is the only continent to span all four hemispheres (Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western). Africa is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea. The continent is divided into five geographic regions: Northern Africa, Western Africa, Central Africa, Eastern Africa and Southern Africa.
