The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador is French) is composed of the island of Newfoundland and a larger mainland sector, Labrador, to the northwest. It is the most easterly province in Canada, situated in the northeastern region of North America. The province also includes over 7,000 small islands. The highest point of the province is Mount Caubvick (1,652 m), on the border between Labrador and Quebec, and the highest point on Newfoundland is Cabox (812 m). The capital city is St. John’s, on Newfoundland. The province of Quebec is to the west.

The province is divided into five regions: Labrador, Western, Central, Eastern and Avalon. The last four regions located on Newfoundland. It is the newest province of Canada, joining the confederation in 1949. The name was officially changed to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001. The French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon lies off the coast of the Burin Peninsula in southeastern Newfoundland.

The island of Newfoundland was named by the early 16th-century explorers and is separated from Labrador by the narrow Strait of Belle Isle. The Innu and Inuit have lived here for thousands of years, and their cultures are rooted in a deep, spiritual relationship with the environment. In 1501 Portuguese brothers Gaspar Corte-Real and Miguel Corte-Real charted part of the coast of Newfoundland (Terra Nova in Portuguese) in an attempt to find the Northwest Passage.

Fjord in the Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland, a world heritage site. The park takes its name from Newfoundland's second-highest mountain peak (806 m) located within the park.
