of Canada published in 1906 by the Department of Interior in the Atlas of
Canada, territorial divisions. It shows the territories and provinces the
way they were at the time. Provinces of Manitoba and
Quebec were much
smaller. The Northwest Territories were the largest political division of
Canada. Nunavut was separated from the Northwest Territories in 1999.
The population of Canada, in 1901, was 5.4 million people. It grew to 7.2 million by the 1911. Canada’s economy grew and became more industrialized during the economic boom of the 1890s and early 1900s. One million British immigrated to Canada at this time. Another million immigrants came from the United States.
Alberta became a Canadian province in 1905, named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne, Governor General of Canada between 1878 and 1883. Saskatchewan became a province in the same year and brought in a large number of immigrants.
