Massachusetts is one of the states of New England in the USA, the sixth smallest state. The capital and largest city is Boston. Massachusetts is bordered by the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Boston
The city of Boston has grown dramatically since its original settlement in the 17th century. In the early 19th century, downtown Boston was a peninsula, surrounded by several large islands and headlands across the Charles River. In the ensuing 170 years, much of Boston Harbor and the mouth of the Charles River were filled in to create buildable land.
