Tanner began to develop his American Atlas, in 1818. Released in 5 folios between 1819 and 1823. The production resulted in the split of Tanner from his partners Kearney & Vallance, but resulted in one of the most complete Atlases of the United States. This map was updated to 1825.
This 19th century map shows state boundaries (New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island) and various regional details, including roads, rivers, lakes, turnpikes, villages, mills, ironworks, forts, post offices, battle grounds, places of worship, public houses, roads, ferries, falls and other features. It also includes Long Island Sound, Lake Ontario and Canada border, Lake Erie, Lake Champlain (between New York and Vermont).
In 1820, the population of New York State was 1.4 million residents. It was then the most populous state in the United States.
