Old Yankee Stadium, Bronx - 1938

The old Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York City (enlargement below). It was home of the New York Yankees from 1923 to 2008. Photo dated February 8, 1938. Source: Mitchel Field, N.Y. Records of the Army Air Forces, U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.

The stadium was built from 1922 to 1923 by Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert Jr. (1867-1939). The old Yankee Stadium hosted several historic events, many of them baseball-related, including World Series games. In 2006, the Yankees began building a new stadium in public parkland adjacent to the old stadium, which closed after the 2008 season. The new Yankee Stadium opened in 2009.
