South Ferry and Battery Park - 1922

Aerial view of the old South Ferry terminal and the elevated station next to Battery Park, on the southern tip of Manhattan, seen from the Upper New York Bay. Photo dated August 20, 1922 (1 P.M.). Source: Records of the Army Air Forces, National Archives at College Park. Enlargement of the buildings on State and Whitehall streets is on the right.

Two tracks came from the combined Second and Third Avenue lines, and two from the Sixth and Ninth Avenue lines, making four tracks at the South Ferry terminal, with platforms on the outside and between each pair of tracks. Today, South Ferry is the embarkation point for ferries to Staten Island and Governors Island. The name derives from the southernmost service route of the historical South Ferry Company established in 1836 to connect Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn.
