Broadway and Trinity Church - 1830

Watercolor by John William Hill (1812-1879). Created in 1830. That was the second temple of the Trinity Church, demolished in 1839. The old Grace Church is seen in the distance and the City Hotel is on the right. Source: The New York Public Library.

The first franchise for supplying the City of New York with gas was granted in 1823.

In the 1830s, Broadway was considered to be the most splendid street in the city, the great and fashionable resort for citizens and strangers, and it was much crowded during pleasant weather.
