Lincoln's body lay in state in New York's City Hall on April 24th and 25th, 1865. The four-story brownstone mansion on the left (849 Broadway) was the home of Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt (1794-1871), grandfather of Theodore Roosevelt. It was demolished by 1872. The procession, watched by crowds of pedestrians, also passed in other cities, before burial in Springfield, Illinois on May 4th.  In 1870, the Lincoln Monument, was installed in Union Square.
