Battery Park - 1928

Aerial view of Battery Park, on the southern tip of Manhattan. Photo dated May 5, 1928. Source: Mitchel Field N.Y., Records of the Army Air Forces.

Photograph shows some of the skyscrapers of the time, specially along Broadway, part of the section known as Canyon of Heroes. The Harriman Building, a 37-story office building at 39 Broadway, was built from 1926 to 1928. The Columbia Building, at 29 Broadway, was replaced by a 30-story office building, completed in 1931. Hudson River is in the background.

The two tracks come from the combined Sixth and Ninth Avenue lines to the South Ferry terminal to the right. The Ninth Avenue elevated railway opened in 1868 as the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway. It was electrified and taken over by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in 1903. The main line ceased operation in June 1940.
