Traffic on Broadway 1860

This vintage photograph, looking north on Lower Broadway, shows traffic, pedestrians and American and Japanese flags displayed on buildings welcoming Japanese embassy officials during their June 1860 visit to New York City. City Hall Park is in the distance and the spire of St. Paul's Chapel is on the left. The six-story Gilsey Building, completed in 1854, is at the corner of Cortlandt St.
