Madison Cottage, Madison Square - 1852

The old Madison Cottage, in 1852, on the site of the later Fifth Avenue Hotel, facing Madison Square. Illustration by Baldwin & Gleason Co. Ld. N.Y. from the New York Public Library, published about 1900. Text on print:

«Site of the Fifth Avenue Hotel, 1852. "Madison Cottage" was removed in 1852, and was succeeded in 1853 by Franconi's Hippodrome, famous for mammoth entertainments and amusements. The present structure was commenced in 1856, and the hotel was opened to the public August 23, 1859, by Hitchcock, Darling & Co. The first passenger elevator ever made was put in successful operation here, at the opening of the house.

The history of the Fifth Avenue Hotel is known to the world. King's Hand Book of New York says: "From the arrival of the Prince of Wales in 1860 until now, no other hotel in the world has entertained so many distinguished people as have been received at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. It has been centre of the great public occasions which New York has witnessed for the last 40 years".»
